Monday, March 2, 2026Kungoni Centre of Culture & Art is Malawi’s largest and most comprehensive museum complex, It serves as a bridge between traditional culture and modern Malawian identity through art, research, performance, and education. it offers:
▫️ The Chamare Museum The Chamare Museum consists of three galleries that interpret the history of Mua Mission and the cultural traditions, rituals, and rites of passage of the Chewa, Ngoni, and Yao peoples.
▫️ Gule Wamkulu Collection The centre houses a globally recognized collection of masks and effigies used in the Gule Wamkulu (“Great Dance”), which is inscribed by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
▫️Kungoni Art & Carving Centre The art gallery showcases the evolution of Malawian wood carving over several decades. High-quality carvings produced here are included in international collections, including the Vatican and Buckingham Palace.
▫️ Cultural Troupe A dedicated troupe performs traditional songs and dances in an on-site amphitheater (advance booking recommended).
⚫ Community & Education Initiatives 🔸Carving Centre Employs over 100 local carvers, providing training and supporting families through woodcraft sales.
🔸Kumbewu (Women Development Centre) Empowers women through skills training, including traditional jewelry and crafts.
🔸Kafukufuku Research Centre A library and archive with thousands of books, photographs, and video materials documenting Malawian oral traditions and history.
⚫ Cultural Festival Every year in the first week of August, Kungoni hosts a cultural festival featuring traditional dances, music, and performances attended by both national and international visitors.
