Wednesday, February 18, 2026Lilongwe – In just 9 days, Finance Minister will stand up in Parliament and present the 2026/27 National Budget. Economists are already calling for incentives to businesses, more support for farmers, and serious cost-cutting at government level. President Mutharika has already directed ministers to limit local travel to one trip per month to save fuel and allowances. Parliament opened the budget session on 16 February with talks about reducing domestic borrowing (currently projected at K2.4 trillion) and bringing down the wage + debt bill which eats 90% of the budget. For the ordinary Malawian in Lilongwe or Mzuzu:
• Will fuel and fertiliser subsidies stay or expand?
• Any new tax relief for small businesses and vendors?
• More money for tourism (already growing fast) and job creation?
• Food security – after last season’s challenges, this is huge.
The Warm Heart needs a budget that puts money in people’s pockets and creates real jobs, not just numbers on paper. Whether you’re a teacher, taxi driver, farmer or young graduate looking for opportunities, 27 February at 2pm could shape your 2026.
