Saturday, March 21, 2026Weeks after Minister of Finance Joseph Mwanamvekha presented the 2026–2027 National Budget, outlining government’s intention to engage global digital platform operators to unlock revenue opportunities, the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority has announced the rollout of a monetisation-focused engagement with Meta and TikTok in Malawi.
During the budget statement, Mwanamvekha indicated that government would initiate structured negotiations with international digital platforms to establish regulatory and fiscal frameworks that enable Malawi to derive value from the digital economy, including taxation, innovation support, and local enterprise participation.
In a public communication, MACRA says it has scheduled a high-level engagement for April 16 at the Bingu International Convention Centre, designed as a strategic interface to align Malawi’s creative sector with global monetisation standards and platform governance systems.
According to the regulator, the initiative is expected to unlock revenue streams for local creators through content monetisation, while positioning government to benefit from value-added tax, expanded youth employment, digital entrepreneurship growth, and broader participation in the global digital value chain.
