About the Jennifer Ward Oppenheimer Research Grant
The Jennifer Ward Oppenheimer Research Grant (JWO Research Grant) was established in memory of Mrs Jennifer Ward Oppenheimer, honoring her commitment to Africa, the environment, and science.
Now in its eighth year, the grant has received a record 848 applications from 30 African countries in 2025, reflecting the continent’s deep scientific talent.
Purpose and Significance Africa’s ecosystems are vital to global biodiversity and climate regulation. However, researchers face structural funding constraints that limit independent, long-term scientific inquiry.
The JWO Research Grant addresses this gap by investing in innovative, African-led research grounded in local ecological realities.
The grant aims to strengthen institutional networks and elevate African research within global environmental discourse.
Eligibility Criteria Must hold a PhD No more than seven years of post-doctoral research experience (excluding family responsibilities) Affiliated with a credible African institution capable of managing grant funding Research focus must be on or conducted within Africa
Themes and Focus Areas Supported research themes include biodiversity thresholds, freshwater pollution, vector-borne disease dynamics, protected area resilience, and wildlife responses to climate change.
