BACKGROUND The GIZ Global Program for Pandemic Resilience and One Health (GP PROH) supports the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MOHS) in Malawi to address the disease female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) through the initiative “From Neglect to Action: Invest in Women, Invest in Health” (FGS-initiative). This initiative is closely coordinated with the Malawi
German Health Programmme (MGHP). Both programs are commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by GIZ.
The Malawi German Health Programme is the technical cooperation programme of the German Development Cooperation’s (GDC) support to the health sector in Malawi. The main objective is “Health Systems Strengthening with a Focus on Reproductive Health”. MGHP provides technical support to the MOHS, regulatory bodies, academic institutions, and implements interventions in the four target districts of Dedza, Lilongwe, Mchinji and Ntcheu.
The FGS project is a new initiative by BMZ that started in 2024 and is informed by the German Feminist Development Policy. The main aim of the initiative is to increase access for women to health services that include screening, treatment and counseling for female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) and to empower women and girls to take measures to prevent and combat female genital schistosomiasis. The initiative is being implemented in Dedza and Salima.
This position is based in Lilongwe, Malawi. The junior advisor will work closely with other technical advisors of the Programme based in Malawi and Germany.
RESPONSIBILITIES The Junior Technical advisor is responsible for performing the following tasks in close collaboration with other GIZ technical advisors and relevant ministries
Technical advisory
The Junior Technical Advisor will support provision of technical advisory to the partners
Training delivery: Support planning and delivery of training sessions for service providers, women and young girls
Technical assistance: Assist senior team members in delivering technical advisory services to government partners and other organisations involved in the initiative
Coaching & mentorship: Provide ongoing technical skills strengthening through regular field follow-ups and on-site coaching for service providers and community beneficiaries
District coordination: Liaison with District Council authorities through the district health office to align project activities with local government priorities.
Logistics & equipment: Assist in the preparation and logistics of capacity-building activities (e.g. trainings, workshops) under the guidance of senior colleagues as well as organizing the procurement and distribution of essential training materials including IEC materials
Administrative support: Providing administrative and analytical support to the team of advisors working with ministry partners and other CSOs to enhance access to FGS services. supporting documentation within the team (archiving, file management support, note taking as well as procurement of materials and services
Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) support: The advisor will ensure high-quality data collection to track project progress against its goal of integration of FGS.
Workshop support: Manage the logistics and post-processing of M&E workshops and internal review sessions.
Data management: Support data management for the initiative to support tracking of module objectives
Field data collection: Support consultants with field data collection during periodic monitoring visits and the project's end-line survey.
Project communication and visibility
The advisor will play a key role in documenting the project's impact and sharing knowledge within the GIZ network and with external partners.
Content creation: Draft short communications, success stories, articles, and monthly newsletters highlighting project milestones.
Internal coordination: Actively participate in communication and other internal knowledge-sharing platforms.
Partner coordination: Support senior staff in engagements with relevant partners by compiling information, taking notes, and following up on action points.
Knowledge management: Maintain a structured digital archive of project photos, videos, and technical reports for easy retrieval. Supporting the development of a knowledge product.
Stakeholder relations: Support the preparation of presentations, policy briefs compiling relevant information, documenting meetings, and following up on action points.
Other Duties /additional Tasks
Performs other duties and tasks at the request by GIZ management Represents the FGS-initiative in national meetings and relevant technical working groups and strong network Liaises with other GIZ programmes and conducting joint activities in coordination with the line manager Perform any other duties as assigned by line manager REQUIRED Qualifications, COMPETENCES AND EXPERIENCE Qualifications
University degree in an area related to health (Nursing, Medicine, Environmental/Public Health, Social science)
Professional Experience
The candidate should have 2-3 years of technical experience in the health sector with a focus on preventive interventions Working experience in NTD (Neglected Tropical Diseases), SRHR (Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights) or gender is an added advantage Experience working in international development or similar settings. Experience in management of administrative responsibilities Experience in the organisation and delivery of trainings and advisory services for the health sector Knowledgeable and experience with the topic of Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and Schistosomiasis Other Knowledge and additional Competences
High degree of self-initiative and organization. Capacity to ensure timely and professional results. Strong competencies in communication and working as part of the international team. Availability to go on field missions as needed and/or support remotely. Excellent facilitation, moderation, and communication skills. Strong analytical and strategic thinking abilities. Ability to translate complex technical concepts into practical, user-friendly formats. Experience in training-of-trainers (ToT) approaches is an asset. High level of intercultural competence and ability to work in multi-stakeholder environments. Fluency in English and Chichewa (written and spoken); knowledge of additional languages is an advantage. Proficiency in standard MS Office applications
