BCMCF-M is seeking qualified candidates to fill the following positions.

POSITION 1: STAFF NURSE

Reports to: Nurse Manager

Contract Duration: 1 year (renewable based on performance and funding availability)

Status: Full time (40 hours per week)

JOB TYPE: Full Time

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Staff Nurse shall provide evidence-based nursing care, participate in training and research under supervision of the Pediatric Hematology Oncology (PHO) Head of Nursing.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications and Experience:

Registered Nurse (RN), with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).

Current nursing license through all appropriate regulatory bodies.

Minimum of 3 years' experience in the field of nursing.

Must have strong communication and leadership skills.

Must be able to build a solid rapport with all staff members.

Excellent communication skills.

Experience in quality improvement projects (clinical setting).

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide evidence-based nursing care to children with cancer and Blood diseases:

Perform evidence-based nursing assessments of patients including assessment of vital signs, subjective history, and head-to-toe assessment.

Administer chemotherapy as per established nursing practice guidelines of the PHO COE including use of the chemotherapy checklist.

Preparation of chemotherapy as per established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) (unless a dedicated oncology pharmacy has assumed this role).

Manage the clinical space, patient flow, supplies and equipment in liaison with ED and other administrative staff.

Administer supportive care and other medications prescribed for the care of PHO patients.

Perform phlebotomy for labs ordered for PHO patient care as well as research samples.

Conduct a structured hand-off with nursing staff at shift change.

Assist physicians in performing PHO-related procedures including monitoring of patient status throughout the procedure.

Provide patient and family teaching of patient's condition, treatment plan, and appropriate home care prior to discharge of patients.

Participate in PHO Nursing Education:

Participating in PHO Nurse training workshops as a learner or as trainer.

Provide in-service training for junior nurses and nursing students.

Provide bedside teaching and mentorship to junior nurses and nursing students.

Participate in the development and revision of PHO nursing curriculum.

Engage in continuing nurse education (CNE) activities to maintain and improve clinical acumen.

Participate in PHO Research:

Participate in the collection of research samples, e.g. blood draws.

Provide nursing care according to SOPs for PHO patients enrolled in research.

Ensure ethical conduct of research in allocated PHO areas, and report any suspicion of unethical research activity.

Participating in the education of patients and their families regarding participation in research.

Participate in Quality Improvement (QI) Projects:

Identify QI needs for the Centre of Excellence (COE).

Participate in design and conduct of QI projects including Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles.

POSITION 2: PHARMACIST

Reports to: Medical Director

Contract Duration: 1 year (renewable based on performance and funding availability)

Status: Full time (40 hours per week)

JOB TYPE: Full Time

POSITION DESCRIPTION

To promote excellence in pharmaceutical care through management of medication preparation, dispensing and distribution process, identifying and preventing dispensing errors, and resolving any distribution related issues. Additionally performs all duties of a registered pharmacist and all responsibilities will be performed in a manner that is developmentally appropriate for pediatric patients.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications and Experience:

Bachelor's degree in pharmacy or any related qualification.

Registration and/or licensure as pharmacist with the country's local licensing authority.

Minimum of 3 years' experience in the field of pharmacology.

Certificate of good standing from the country's local licensing authority.

One year of experience in a pediatric inpatient hospital, or two years of experience in an inpatient hospital pharmacy.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Ensures medications and patient care meet the highest standards.

Ensures the appropriateness of all medication doses in reference to the patient's diagnosis, weight/body surface area, allergies, and drug interactions.

Maintains a drug information system.

Accurately enters and/or verifies medication orders in the drug information system, evidenced by lack of medication incidents.

Ensures aseptic technique and infection control in the preparation of sterile products.

Maintains requisite recertification as per local licensure requirements and continuing education.

Monitors consumption rates of drugs and medical supplies and facilitates their replenishment in a timely manner and in liaison with the relevant procurement personnel.

Ensures proper storage, recording, and accountability of drugs and medical supplies and that every item has an up-to-date stock card and conducts regular stocktaking.

Facilitates the proper disposal of damaged and expired products.

Assists in selecting drugs and medical supplies to be used by the PHO program.

Dispenses prescription and non-prescription drugs and medical supplies to both in-patients and out-patients as prescribed by physicians.

Participates in pill cutting.

Ensures that there is always adequate security of drugs and medical supplies.

Observes the country's laws and regulations with regards to ensuring the availability of lockable boxes and registers.

Prepares and submits targeted reports as required by the PHO program and local authorities.

Coordinates quality improvement activities to contribute to improved patient outcomes.

Initiates and processes medication incident and adverse drug reaction reports.

Communicates with others, including checking and responding to all available means of communication.

Participates in hand-off communication with other pharmacy and healthcare staff.

Engages in shift management.

Ensures work environment is clean, neat, well ventilated, well lit, and organized.

Ensures that a suitable temperature is maintained for drugs and medical supplies.

Ensures the smooth running of the pharmacy and acts as a role model for technicians and other pharmacists.

Ensures completion of any PHO-requested checklists or documents.

Works to maintain adequate stock of medications and supplies per par levels or patients' needs.

Performs other essential functions including maintaining investigational drug records, patient confidentiality, and completing mandatory health, safety, and training requirements.

Participates in the education of staff, patients, caregivers, and the community.

Precepts pharmacy students, residents, and other trainees, as appropriate.

Provides correct and timely drug information to medical, nursing, and pharmacy staff as needed.

Provides appropriate counseling for patients on their prescriptions at the time of pick up.
