1.0 Project Background
Location: The MHSP is situated in the Southern Region of Malawi on the lower Shire River, within Blantyre and Neno Districts, approximately 50 km from Blantyre. It lies between the Tedzani and Kapichira hydropower schemes.
Generation Capacity: 356 MW total contractual capacity:
• 300 MW peaking plant
• 56 MW baseload (6 km downstream)
Objective: Perform regular river discharge measurements at three hydrological stations to calibrate rating curves, update them, and improve reliability of flow data for project design, operation, and hydrological assessments.
2.0 Scope of Services
2.1 Monthly River Gauging
• Discharge measurements at three stations
• Dry season: April–November
• Wet season: December–March
2.2 Event-Based Gauging
• On-demand discharge measurements during flood events or high-flow conditions
• Conducted as soon as safely practicable after MHPL notification
2.3 Measurement Methodology
• Riverbed is moving due to sand
• Use ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) linked to GPS antenna or equivalent approved technology
• Follow internationally accepted hydrometric standards and best practices
3.0 Submission Details
