The Humanitarian Access and Safety & Security Advisor is a senior role focused on enabling safe humanitarian access and managing security risks.
The Advisor supports INTERSOS country teams to operate effectively in high-risk environments, ensures the safety of staff, and strengthens local partner capacities.
This role involves strategic analysis, capacity building, and representation in global coordination mechanisms.
Key Responsibilities Humanitarian Context Analysis Monitor operational environments, identify threats, and recommend responses Support crisis analysis and scenario planning for regional and country teams Maintain up-to-date knowledge of INTERSOS operational challenges Lead in-depth analysis and reflection papers as assigned
Humanitarian Access Management Develop strategies to improve access in complex environments Create and promote internal guidance, tools, and context-specific access protocols Advise on negotiations with authorities, armed groups, and security forces Deliver training on humanitarian access to staff and partners Share learning and best practices internally and externally Represent INTERSOS at global access coordination forums
Safety and Security Management Identify and mitigate security risks, support emergency preparedness Support the implementation of Security Minimum Standards (SMS) Develop contingency plans for political or security shifts Provide incident analysis and support during crises Maintain strong networks with security focal points and external partners Oversee security inductions and training for staff deployments Lead recruitment and performance evaluations for security personnel
Capacity Strengthening & Partner Support Extend security capacity to local partners Deliver regular training on security, access, and conflict sensitivity Develop inclusive, gender-sensitive training materials
Languages & Personal Skills Fluent in English and French Leadership, negotiation, and communication skills Flexible, adaptable, and collaborative mindset Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities Ability to foster long-term, transparent relationships with teams and partners

Qualifications & Experience Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field Minimum 7 years of experience in international humanitarian assistance, with proven leadership in security and access management Previous experience with INTERSOS is advantageous Expertise in conflict analysis, access negotiation, and security risk management Strong understanding of IHL and humanitarian principles Proven ability to develop training and transfer knowledge Excellent communication and influencing skills Willingness to travel frequently, with at least 4 field visits annually
