PROJECT SHERQ OFFICER @ILLOVO SUGAR (MALAWI) PLC

Illovo Sugar (Malawi) plc is the country’s leading producer of raw, refined and specialty sugars, employing more than 9000 employees. Illovo Sugar (Malawi) plc is part of Illovo Sugar Africa Group; a wholly-owned subsidiary of Associated British Foods plc (ABF).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Implement the project SHERQ Management Plan and develop site-specific procedures
• Administer Permit-to-Work systems: excavation, confined spaces, hot work. Verify utility clearances
• Conduct safety audits, walks, and hazard assessments for excavation, pipe laying, heavy lifting
• Align operations with Malawi occupational health and safety requirements and MEPA ESMP standards
• Direct accident, near-miss, and root-cause investigations. Track corrective actions
• Lead site inductions, task briefings, and toolbox talks
• Participate in constructability/risk meetings and oversee GRP piping safety/quality controls
• Compile monthly HSE statistical reports and maintain SHERQ compliance registers

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

• Diploma/Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering or equivalent
• Those with SAMTRAC / NEBOSH qualification; ISO 9001/Lead Auditor qualification will have an advantage
• 5-10 years experience in Occupational Health and Safety, preferably in a construction environment
• Good communication skills: Verbal and Written
• Project management skills and good working knowledge with community stakeholders
