VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT@ Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) POSITION: LEGAL METROLOGY OFFICER Location: Blantyre OVERVIEW The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) is a statutory organization established in 1972 by an Act of Parliament (Cap 51:02) with a mandate to promote standardization of commodities and their manufacture, production, processing or treatment and to provide for the verification and calibration of weighing and measuring instruments; and further to provide for matter incidental to or connected with standardization. The MBS is inviting applications from suitably qualified and interested persons to fill the following vacancies: 6. Vac. No. BS/EXT. VAC. 06/2026-27 Job Title: Legal Metrology Officer Grade: BS6 Reporting to: Senior Legal Metrology Officer Department: Metrology Services Section: Legal Metrology Responsible for: Senior Legal Metrology Technician Number of Posts: Four (4) Job Purpose To ensure the effective and efficient verification of weighing and measuring equipment. Key roles and responsibilities a) Facilitating the verification of weighing and measuring instruments; b) Planning verification and inspection trips; c) Supervising Senior Legal Metrology Technicians; d) Maintaining accuracy of legal metrology working standards; e) Initiating legal proceedings against contraveners of the Act; f) Verifying working standards; g) Keeping and updating records for verification equipment; h) Initiating maintenance of equipment; i) Compiling weekly progress reports; and j) Appraising the performance of Senior Legal Metrology Technicians. Required Academic Qualifications and Experience The ideal candidate should possess: a) A Bachelor of Science (Honours) Degree in Physics or A Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Degree in Mechanical, Civil, Electrical and Electronics, Biomedical, Metallurgy Engineering or Metrology; b) At least 2 years’ practical experience in a related field.
