Thursday, March 5, 2026Dziwe la Nkhalamba is one of the natural dams found on Mulanje Mountain, one of the most famous mountains in Malawi. The dam is a popular stop for hikers and tourists who explore the mountain because of its beautiful scenery and the traditional stories surrounding it.
The dam is believed to be more than 60 meters deep and is surrounded by rocks and natural vegetation. Small waterfalls can also be seen around the area, making the place both attractive and mysterious.
The name Dziwe la Nkhalamba comes from a local belief. In the past, people said that when visitors arrived at the dam, they would sometimes see an elderly man sitting on a stone nearby. When the old man noticed someone approaching, he would suddenly sink into the water and disappear. Because of this strange occurrence, the dam was given the name Dziwe la Nkhalamba.
Local people also say that old clay pots have been found around the dam, which adds to the mystery of the place. In earlier times, some communities believed that the dam was home to spirits, although today many people believe the spirits moved to quieter areas of the mountain. Tourists are advised to be careful when visiting because the dam is very deep and steep.
Despite its mystery, Dziwe la Nkhalamba remains one of the interesting natural attractions that visitors can discover when exploring Mulanje Mountain.
